Who hasn't experienced a bit of stage fright before speaking in front of a group? Or had butterflies before a presentation or competition? Feeling nervous before putting ourselves in these situations is normal. But for those with Social Anxiety, the feeling isn't nervousness but intense fear and near panic.

Social Anxiety can be debilitating, especially for those whose activities require them to speak or perform in front of others.
The fear and avoidance can feel overwhelming and the potential embarrassment seems imminent.
This can lead to lost opportunities, missed experiences, even the loss of interaction with peers.

Fortunately Social Phobia, like certain other anxiety disorders, is one of the most easily treated mental health conditions. At the Bay Area Center for Anxiety we use empirically validated Cognitive Behavioral Therapy techniques to help those suffering from Social Phobia. Our goal is to help you push past the fear and take center stage.
Signs of Social Phobia in Teens
  • A marked, persistent of one or more social or performance situations in which a person is exposed to unfamiliar people.
  • The person fears they will act in a manner that will be embarrassing or humiliating.
  • Exposure to the situation almost invariably provokes intense anxiety. Sometimes this anxiety can take the form of a Panic Attack.
  • The person recognizes that the fear is excessive or unreasonable.
  • The feared social or performance situation is avoided or endured with intense anxiety or stress.
  • The avoidance, anxiety, or distress in the feared social or performance situation interferes significantly with school or social activities - or there is is marked distress about having social phobia.
  • The fear or avoidance is not due to the direct physiological effects of a substance, a medical problem or other mental health disorder.
