Trauma can have profound lasting impact on a persons emotional well being. Whether it stems from a car accident, mugging, physical assault, combat experience, sexual abuse, or other life- threatening events, trauma can lead to the development of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Individuals struggling with PTSD may experience intense feelings of fear anger, and sometimes hopeless. After trauma we often feel vulnerable and can lose trust in humanity and the world.
Therapy for PTSD starts with creating a safe place for you to talk about your struggle and eventually work on the trauma. We understand that the last thing that most people who have been through a trauma want to do is talk about it, so we wait until you feel comfortable and ready. However, it is important to recognize the way to recovery from trauma requires processing and working through these experiences. Avoidance while understandable, can reinforce symptoms of PTSD and prolong distress. Fortunately there are effective treatments for PTSD. At the Bay Area Center for Anxiety we use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Prolonged Exposure, and Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing therapy (EMDR), which are A rated treatments by the American Psychological Association for PTSD. These therapies are designed to help individuals regain control and over their lives, reduce distressing symptoms, and move forward with resilience and confidence. |
